Pastors for Peace, please help me save my life.

Dear Pastors for Peace:

Thank you for taking the time to read me. I’m writing to you again regarding my situation: the state of total helplessness I meet, to the point that I might die. Quite honestly, I live in a constant state of anxiety because I don’t want to die now and I don’t want to die in a foreign country. I don’t ask money!

My name is Manuel Castro Rodríguez. I have 65 years old. I was born on February 7, 1949, in Havana, Cuba. The only citizenship that I have is Cuban.

I am an activist involved in the struggles for peace with social justice across the world. I am an unemployed professor from early year 2012, due to I refused to make illegal acts in the Panama International Maritime University (UMIP) and besides, I was fight for to change things for the better Panamanian education. I am guided by these words of Martin Luther King: “There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor political, nor popular, but he must take it because conscience tells him it is right.”

This month a delegation of Pastors for Peace will visit my homeland: Cuba. I envy them, because the government of Cuba will not let me enter my native soil. Google Earth it’s the only way I can ‘visit’ the country where I was born and I love very much.

I am a leftist opponent of the Castro’s dictatorship, because I have a deep sense of humanism and I love the freedom. It is my website.

In accordance with the article 13 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

    (1) Everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence within the borders of each state.

    (2) Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country.

However, tens of thousands of Cubans prevents us from entering our country. This is not a monstrosity?

I visited your website. I really did not like, because in relation with Cuba is full of mistakes as you can see on my website.

I need that Pastors for Peace do me the favor of to make all the necessary arrangements with the government of Cuba for me to be repatriated to Cuba. I’d rather die in a Cuban prison that to be homeless in Panama.

Iglesia en Cuba: 62 años después de la Declaración Universal de los Derechos Humanos.

La Iglesia cubana debiera sentirse honrada y comprometida cuando conocemos el papel gestor que desempeñó Cuba en 1948 en el pleno de las Naciones Unidas, obviando un pronunciamiento, en mi opinión, su oposición ante la Resolución 181 en la creación del Estado de Israel.

Hablar en Cuba hoy de los Derechos Humanos es una moda, un resguardo y una afrenta. Moda por el constante uso de estos términos en todas las esferas sociales Resguardo para aquellos que hacen sus reclamos exigiendo que sus derechos sean respetados y afrenta para aquellos que violan y atropellan el derecho ajeno.

Esta Declaración Universal de los Derechos Humanos busca proteger los derechos individuales-sociales de todas las personas en las naciones firmantes. Pareciera algo nuevo todo este proyecto internacional cuando realmente es el resultado del sufrimiento y experiencia de las naciones en el decursar de la Historia.

No es secreto alguno que oficiales de la Iglesia protestante en Cuba lucharon por verla libre del régimen despótico español de la época a mediados y finales del siglo XIX. Muchos dieron sus vidas en los campos de batalla o murieron en las cárceles. Se crearon organizaciones cristianas en la Isla y fuera de ella como la “Sociedad de Socorros Mutuos Hijos de la Fe”, de la Iglesia Metodista, para defender los derechos de los trabajadores de las tabaquerías. La Iglesia Bautista organizó la Sociedad de la Cruz Blanca Cubana. En mayo del 1897 el periódico Patria hacía público el envío de ropas, medicinas y materiales quirúrgicos para las tropas independentistas. Pastores y líderes de los Estados Unidos ayudaron a los patriotas cubanos, brindando sus casas y Templos para que se realizaran mítines y colectas.

62 años después del nacimiento de la Declaración Universal de los Derecho Humanos, las diferentes direcciones religiosas evangélicas cubanas han asumido una posición muy pasiva y diferente ante su compromiso social cristiano, al no pronunciarse en la defensa de los Derechos Humanos. La creencia de no inmiscuirse en política como algo anti bíblico es la doctrina o escusa más frecuente utilizada para no hacer nada ante cualquier injusticia que pueda cometer el Estado Cubano. La total sumisión y obediencia ante el régimen o gobierno y el continuo recurso espiritual de dejar a Dios que haga todas las cosas, es una distinción común de la posición evangélica cubana. Todo a pesar de la creciente influencia mundial de las diferentes organizaciones cristianas de respaldar y promover los Derechos Humanos.

De por sí es una actitud vergonzosa no asumir una postura cristiana comprometida con las necesidades económicas, morales, políticas o sociales dentro de la isla, sino que se suman a las violaciones silenciando a Pastores y Laicos de las congregaciones cuando estos se pronuncian contra el régimen o gobierno por defender sus derechos y de la Nación toda, como la libertad de expresión y asociación, el pluripartidismo y toda suerte de denuncias y reclamos sociales. Estos por lo general son excluidos de la comunión.

Casos como el laico Aníbal Alemán Giménez, marginado y discriminado por su propio Pastor a fin de excluirlo de su comunidad cristiana. Experiencia similar fue vivida por quien escribe este articulo siendo víctima de la directiva de la Convención Bautista de Cuba Occidental por opinar sobre un Manual de Oración que mutila la Escritura plegándose a los intereses del gobierno, anulando su compromiso con la verdad y la justicia.

Brazilian priest Frei Betto said on Wednesday that the Cuban people enjoy the three main human rights: food, health and education.
In an exclusive interview with ACN, the author of the 1985 book ‘Fidel y la Religion’ (Fidel and Religion) said that the work of Cuba in the field of human rights is an example for all the countries that signed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and do not observe its principles.
Betto, who was in Cuba attending an International Workshop titled “The
Universal Declaration of Human Rights: 60 Years Later” that took place at Havana’s Convention Center with the participation of over one hundred foreign personalities and representatives of the Cuban civil society, added that there are no missing people in Cuba or extrajudicial executions or children living in the streets.
“The Universal Declaration is still a virtual document,” stressed the Brazilian theologian, although he recognized the importance of the text establishing that all human beings have rights.
Betto noted that guaranteeing the right to food, health and education and making investments in these sectors would be a colossal step ahead for many countries.
In addition, he said that there is freedom of religious belief in Cuba and referred to the recent inauguration of a Russian Orthodox Cathedral in Havana.
Betto stated that Cuba is a model of a humanist nation where its people have their rights guaranteed in spite of US aggressions and an almost fifty-year-old financial, trade and economic blockade.

Dissidents, assaulted, beaten and detained
Havana, Cuba .Dec. 11 - At least 20 activists were detained in Cuba this week for planning to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). According to independent and verifiable sources inside Cuba, detainees, some of who were taken by force and beaten, include former political prisoners, human rights activists, opposition political leaders, and independent journalists.
“The government of Raul Castro is arresting human rights advocates for wanting to celebrate a declaration of human rights—it’s business as usual, the new boss is the same as the old boss,” said Sarah Wasserman, Chief Operating Officer of the Human Rights Foundation. “For a country that denies violating human rights, this is the epitome of hypocrisy; it’s evident that the Cuban government’s signing of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights to notable pomp, circumstance, and self-congratulation earlier this year was just window-dressing.”
